Free Mental Health Support Services for Saskatchewan Agriculture Producers

Our program offers free mental health support services for Saskatchewan agriculture producers, their family members and to agricultural workers. Each individual is eligible for six free one hour sessions with trained and registered mental health professionals that have a background in farm culture.

Eligibility criteria:

  • must be an agriculture producer, their family member or an agricultural worker

  • must be from Saskatchewan

  • Leanne Thoroughgood

    Leanne has worked for the Department of National Defence since 1997 as a clinical social worker providing psychosocial and mental health care to military members in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In 1992, she completed her bachelor’s of social work through the University of Regina. Leanne worked in the Weyburn/Estevan area from 1992-1997 with the Department of Social Services in various roles of child protection, young offenders worker, and foster parent program. She also worked in community organizations related to women’s services and programs for children. In 1997, Leanne and her husband, Paul, moved to Paul’s family farm in the Moose Jaw area where they raised their family and continue to farm while also having off-farm occupations.

    In 2010, Leanne took a leave of absence from her employment to pursue her master’s in social work through the University of Regina. She completed her classes and practicum placement in one year before returning to work in 2011. Leanne completed her final report in 2014 and received her master’s of social work degree in 2015. She focused her graduate work on couples counseling and studied emotionally focused therapy based on attachment theory. Her final report is titled, Find your voice through emotional focused therapy and attachment theory. Since then, Leanne engaged in private practice through local agencies. She ended her private practice during the pandemic to focus on herself, her family, and to provide care to her primary occupation population.

    With the emergence of virtual care, Leanne is interested in providing people in remote situations with ethical, evidenced-based therapy practices.

    Dr. Phil has 30 years of experience in serving farm families and others living in rural Saskatchewan. He has both an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan as well as a lot of life experience - things you can't learn from books! Phil has been recognized as a leader in the field of grief and loss, having served as Chair of the International Work Group on Death, Dying & Bereavement.

    He provides psychological counseling for a wide range of issues including stress, anxiety, depression, life transitions, career changes, grief/bereavement, relationships, communication, trauma, and infertility. As a Registered Doctoral Psychologist, he is authorized to make and communicate mental health diagnoses, which is sometimes required by insurers when a person is applying for or receiving short or long-term disability insurance.

    His office in Saskatoon is fully accessible and dog-friendly (including homemade dog treats). Phone, video, and evening sessions are also available. There is free parking available.

    Susan was raised in rural southwestern Manitoba. Her personal experiences and assisting many farm clients over the years have highly influenced her understanding of the difficulties and challenges unique to farm families. She holds an advanced degree in Applied Cultural Anthropology from the University of Manitoba, a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Regina, and a master's degree in clinical Social Work from McGill University. She has nearly three decades of experience working as a therapist.

    Prior to entering private practice, Susan worked in both rural and urban communities including two hospitals in Mental Health and Addictions services. Susan has thirteen years of experience with a community service agency in Saskatoon as a senior staff therapist.

    She has a variety of clinical passions including relationship support. Whether you are single and dating, partnered or married, Susan can assist you with any problems or difficulties which may arise in your relationship. She is also a specialist in working with couples. Susan can also help if you are experiencing a separation or grieving a relationship. She is also a certified Discernment Counsellor if you are considering separation or divorce.

    Susan specializes in trauma care and is certified in neurobiological-based, affect-focused treatment models for trauma treatment. She also is highly experienced with issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, family problems, workplace issues, identity issues, and more. She is pleased to assist you with a wide variety of issues or concerns in any area of life in which you may need caring, skilled, supportive, and compassionate guidance. Susan is sensitive and extremely non-judgmental. She views the therapy relationship as a collaborative process. She has a home-based office in Saskatoon and currently offers Zoom or similar sessions.
